HR Officer

Our client, a leader in the retail sector, is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented HR Officer to join their team. The HR Officer will manage the full employee lifecycle, provide expert HR advisory services, and support the business with effective talent, compliance, and employee relations solutions. The main purpose of the Human Resources Officer function is to support and contribute to the overall achievement of the strategic goals of the Human Resources Department in accordance with Company policies and statutory legislation.  Furthermore, take ownership of the talent acquisition process from start to finish, provide support and advisory services in terms of Industrial Relations, deliver high-quality Human Resources products, projects, HR-Administration, analytics and reporting.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Talent Acquisition & Employee Lifecycle

  • Manage recruitment, selection, and onboarding of staff at all levels.
  • Ensure recruitment documentation, pre-employment checks, and reference verifications are completed accurately and on time.
  • Collaborate with approved recruitment agencies to meet hiring needs within deadlines.
  • Maintain job descriptions and performance management documents.
  • Oversee termination processes and conduct exit interviews when required.

HR Advisory Services

  • Support managers with probation and performance reviews.
  • Provide expert guidance on HR policies, procedures, and legal compliance.
  • Train and educate managers and employees on workplace processes and changes.
  • Advise on absenteeism and other workforce concerns.
  • Handle confidential employee issues with discretion and professionalism.

Industrial Relations

  • Act as first-line advisor on disciplinary and grievance matters.
  • Support misconduct and incapacity investigations, ensuring corrective action is implemented.
  • Promote fair and consistent application of discipline.
  • Prepare and support managers for disciplinary, grievance, and appeal hearings.
  • Assist in performance management and problem resolution.

Reports & Administration

  • Maintain accurate HR reports (Recruitment Tracker, IR-Report, Excellence Cup Report, etc.).
  • Keep personnel files compliant with LRA requirements.
  • Monitor and track probation and performance review documentation.

HR-Projects & Ad Hoc Support

  • Assist with HR projects by coaching and mentoring managers on HR processes.
  • Perform additional HR tasks as needed to support business requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Sound understanding of South African labour legislation, including LRA, BCEA, EE, SDL, OHSA, and MIBCO.
  • In-depth knowledge of HR management principles, best practices, and procedures.
  • Strong Industrial Relations (IR) experience and capabilities.
  • Professionalism and ability to act as a trusted business advisor.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to compile, analyse, and report on HR metrics.
  • Detail-oriented, conscientious, and results-driven.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills.
  • Excellent MS Office Suite skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver against project deadlines.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to work effectively in a changing environment.
  • Ability to present information clearly to different audiences.
  • High level of accountability and ownership in task execution.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: BCom in Human Resources Management (or equivalent).
  • Experience: At least 3 years of HR generalist experience.
  • Willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and cross-culturally.
  • Ability to perform under pressure while maintaining required standards.
